gear reviews...

Some people call me a gear head, although I prefer to think of myself as a connoisseur of equipment. I love gear, I collect it like some people do stamps or cars. Not only do I collect it, however, I use it. Perhaps abuse it is a better term, I'm tougher on gear than anyone I know and I burn through it quick enough to give a clerk at the return counter of a major outdoor store a heart attack. For this reason, and probably because I sound like I know what I'm talking about (I don't know where they get that impression), I'm often asked about gear. I get emails about it, phone calls, people stopping me on the river. Instead of writing hundreds of personalize gear reviews, I've decided to start compiling these reviews and putting them in a centralized place. Here you can view the latest gear I'm breaking, the old gear that's held up, and all the gear that hasn't. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me! Your comments are appreciated!

Testing spey rods at a River Run Anglers Spey Clave...

For the waterproofness, breathability, and extreme lightweight, you won't find a better jacket for the weight. While it won't hold up in a sixteen hour downpoor, it's light to never leave your backpack or vest. If you don't mind the weight shavings, I highly recommend this jacket.

Easy in, easy out, holds hooks well. Excellent value for the money, very quick, very secure, highly recommended. Downfalls: only partial rotary, and jaws can break with incorrect hook placement.

golite breeze backpack

Excellent backpack, great expandability, although a few added ounces wouldn't have killed anyone. For what it's designed for, it fills the niche perfectly. Would like a hip belt and some padding in the back.

This rod is my favorite all-around rod for small trout water, from casting streamers to nymph fishing to doing what the rod was designed for: casting dry flies. My one and only complaint about the Winston LT series is, why not put a dot on each side of the ferrule to make it easier to line them up? Taking apart and putting together a five piece rod all day without reference points takes a little bit of practice...

marmot dri-clime side-zip pants

Lightweight, very little bulk, quick on and quick off, wind-proof... I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for any of these features in a pant. These pants woudl perform just as well if they had a lighter zipper, or maybe just a one foot long zipper at the bottom for putting on over the boots, I have only unzipped them fully once, and they're sufficiently difficult to put back together to keep me from doing it regularly!
